Fast roller coaster in the dark, featuring small drops
& sudden turns. A version of the Wild Mouse ride.
Entering Space Mountain, windows appear to look out
into the universe, providing a sensation of walking through space
and the anticipation of a spine-tingling adventure -- a dark ride
through space.
Guests board six-passenger trains that rocket through
tunnels of flickering neon lights, then begin a rapid descent along
an intricate and dark track.
The spatial-effects lighting, sprinkling the inner-heavens
with galaxies of stars, darting meteors and glowing space vehicles,
sets the stage for an adventure as close to a cosmic voyage as most
people will ever experience.

Type - roller coaster
When to go - Very popular, visit first thing
in the morning or in the hour before park closing.
Where to sit - sit in the back for the wildest
ride.
Fastpass
Duration - 3 mins
Restrictions
Must be 44 inches tall to ride.
Guests must transfer from ECVs to available wheelchairs to experience
the attraction.
Guests should be in good health and free from heart, back, or neck
problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated
by this ride.
Expectant mothers should not ride.
Tips - If you don't want to ride Space Mountain
but still want to catch a sneak peak, ride the Tomorrowland Transit
Authority. It goes right through.
If you are going to Space Mountain first at rope-drop, go to the
end of Main Street, turn right past the Plaza Restaurant, &
go up to the rope barrier at the Plaza Pavilion. You will then have
a head start on those waiting at the bridge from the hub.
If your child isn't tall enough to ride, ask the Cast Member for
a 'Mousernaut in Training' certificate.
The more weight you have in the vehicle, the faster it will go.
Facts/History
There are two separate tracks, one having an extra turn. One
is 10ft longer than the other, where they cross over. One track
is 3,186 ft long, the other 3,196 ft.
Space Mountain originated in the early 1960's when Walt Disney conceived
the idea of a high-speed thrill attraction based on the imaginative
thrust and excitement of the Space Age.
Rising to a sloping, cone-shaped peak 183 feet above ground level,
Space Mountain contains 4,508,500 cubic feet -- capable of holding
a small skyscraper in its interior.
The adventure has a base diameter of 300 feet and took two years
to build. In basic structure, the mountain is composed of great
ribbed slopes -- 72 massive pre-stressed concrete beams forming
a gigantic sealed cone. Each of the 74-ton concrete beams was cast
near the Space Mountain site and then hoisted into place by mammoth
cranes to complete the cone. Each beam is 117 feet long and is 13
feet wide at the bottom and 4 feet wide at the top.
Guests are amazed that the maximum speed is 28 mph, because the
attraction delivers high-speed thrills.
Space Mountain is 183ft tall.
A famous urban legend exists that the meteorites projected on the
ceiling of Space Mountain are actually pictures of chocolate chip
cookies. The meteorites are not cookies -- they were created from
an artist's drawing.

"space mountain was great it was our 3rd time
at wdw and i thought it was time i rode this ride.it wasnt as scary
as i thought it would be so i rode it another 3 times its a long
walk up to the start of it but its well worth it.we used the fastpass
which saved a lot of waiting time. we are going back again next
xmas(2003)so ill be going on it again also im making my 11 year
old daughter with me as she has refused to go on any fast rides
and it will be her 3rd vist its a long way to go(we are from england)not
to go on all the rides make the most of it." (11/02) Jan Wheeler
"I really loved Space Mountain! It was my favorite
ride in Disney World. It usually has a REALLY long line so its best
to use a fast pass. I've been to Disney World about 11 times and
every time it gets better and better! Im going in week and Space
Mountain is the ride that I look forward to the most :) Use the
fastpass because the lines are really long." (8/02) Ashley
"Being 14, afraid of heights and plunges, and
an avid WDW attendee you'd think I've been on SM. But no. This attraction
is the only one I have never been on and seems the tamest of the
"thrill" rides. From the reviews on this site, I decided to visit
SM and I actually went through it with out wanting to stop it and
wanting to puke. I am glad I came here and I am glad that I have
a new favorite attraction." (6/02) Rachel
"I, too, felt like I was going to have my head
torn off inside the ride!! I am 6 feet, 8 inches tall, so it's scary
to ride in the dark when you can't see a THING! It's really dark
out on the ride, and I can't believe it's only moving at 28 MPH.
It seems TWICE that! Enjoy!!" I enjoyed it alot!!" Big

"Space Mountain is by far the best roller coaster
at Disneyworld. It delivers the high speed thrills of an outdoor
coaster, but since the ride is entirly indoors, you get a different
effect. After winding through teh enteracne area which is themed
to look like a space station, or spaceport, riders are seated in
their rocket ships and are taken up the first lift hill. After a
turn, there is a second lift hill that is nearly vertical! A red
light shines at the top and there is lots of smo k e. The sounds
of the engine starting up are heard and then total darkness takes
over. Riders are then taken on a winding journey through the darkness
of space, down steep drops, around hairpin turns, and down spirals.
Stars are everywhere to be seen, giving the ride an incredible feel.
You actually feel as if you are in outer space! A few things to
remember about this attraction are: 1) The coaster does not exceed
30mph, but it seems as if it is traveling much faster because of
the darkness. 2) Be sure to head to this attraction first thing,
or use a FASTPASS. 3) Be sure you are in good physical condition!
Have a blast." Will
"Not a rollercoaster fanatic? Neither am I. So
when my father pressured me into this ride I flipped out. Once the
ride started I was so caught up in the senery I forgot about the
rollercoaster its self! Never the less we got on 2 more times! Very
smooth and calm over all." Gracie
"Space Mountain is the worst coaster at Walt
Disney World. It's not as well maintained as Thunder Mountain, and
doesn't have the charm of Splash Mountain. This ride deserves a
moajor make-over to keep it up to par with Tomorrowland and the
rest of the World. Ditto for the Tomorrowland Speedway. There are
long waits for this ride all day, and FASTPASS is a necessity."

"I loved this ride.. I rode it 4 times in a row
and i can definately say it was the best ride in Magic Kingdom.
The wait wasn't very long. Of course we did go on it about an hour
before closing time (which is the best time to go). Even the wait
for the ride was fun because you follow the path and can look at
all the walls,it makes it seem like your walking through space.
The best part I think of the ride was the fact that it was in total
darkness and you didn't know where it would take you next."
Katie
"I must say that Space Mountain is a sentimental
favorite of mine. I am a rollercoaster nut. When we first went to
Disney in 1992, this was the very first ride that I went on. It
was my first time with an indoor coaster. I fell in love with it!
While I have been on other coasters that may be(and are)better than
this one, it is still my favorite. There is nothing like having
to keep your head tucked in because you're afraid you're going to
hit something!" Julie Shippee
