Environmental
excellence is the attitude and commitment to do what is right
for our environment.
The Walt Disney
Company pursuit of environmental excellence started with Walt
himself.
In keeping
with Walt's pioneering spirit, they are committed to using consistent
and conscientious ethics in every facet of the Company's operation.
Some of the things they are doing to help the environment are:
Last year,
at the Walt Disney World Resort, we recycled over 30% of their
waste by recovering newspapers, plastic containers, yard waste,
concrete, office paper, steel and aluminum cans, glass bottles
and many other items.
Prepared unserved
food is collected through Disney Harvest Program, which distributes
food, in conjunction with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central
Florida, to local non-profit agencies.
Unservable
food waste is mixed with yard waste, wood waste, animal manure
and biosolids to use in compost production.
Their Procurement
Services Division is committed to 'Green Purchasing' and is making
great progress in buying recycled products as well as working
with manufacturers to reduce excessive, and non-recyclable packaging.
Many of the
resorts change the bed sheets every three or four nights, or upon
request, which helps with the conservation of water, cleaning
solution, electricity and natural gas.
They use approximately
three million gallons of reclaimed water per day to irrigate the
thousands of beautifully landscaped areas.
They provide
for recycling in many of the guest rooms.
They provide
smoke-free dining in all WDW restaurants.
Paper towels
and toilet paper are purchased in jumbo rolls rather than small
packages, resulting in a reduction of 813,000 pounds of packaging
a year.
The maintenance
and shop areas have studied ways to reduce and reuse the chemicals
and paint waste they generate. They are now utilizing a chemical
cleaning unit that lets solvents be reused indefinitely. More
than a million pounds of broken or surplus wood cargo and shipping
pallets are collected and rebuilt or ground into garden mulch
and sawdust each year.
Infrared sensors
in many restrooms and automatic irrigation controls reduce the
amount of water used by as much as 50 million gallons each year.
