"Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide to Walt Disney World's Best Kept Secrets"
by Steve Barrett
What is a Hidden Mickey? For those who don't know, a "Hidden Mickey" is a partial or complete image of Mickey Mouse that has been designed to blend into the surroundings in such a way that its presence is not immediately obvious. Placed by Imagineers into rides, restaurants, shops and resorts.
Steve Barrett is an Orlando-area emergency room physician who spends his spare time scouring Walt Disney World and Disneyland for Hidden Mickeys. His love of the hidden mouse led him to put together a book on the subject. But rather than simply list each and every Hidden Mickey he turned the book into a series of scavenger hunts, complete with clues, hints and points to be scored.
The Walt Disney World Hidden Mickeys Field Guide has just been published in its 4th edition, with 100 new Hidden Mickeys added, bringing the total to nearly 900.
The 253 page book begins with an acknowledgement list of people who have spotted new Hidden Mickeys, so if you'd like to see your name in print, keep your eyes spotted next time you're at the parks!
Following that are six chapters, each with a scavenger hunt for the four parks, resort hotels and "Hither & Thither." Each scavenger hunt directs you around the park and gives a clue for each Hidden Mickey to hunt for, along with points to score if you find it. Then there are hints listed for each clue, describing exactly where the Mickeys are.
Each attraction / resort / restaurant is listed individually in the index for quick reference.
The book is probably best for guests who have visited the parks a few times rather than first time visitors, who would be more interested in experiencing the attraction for the first time rather than Hidden Mickey hunting. If you're looking for something a bit different to do when visiting the parks you can use the book to have a fun scavenger hunt in the parks with friends and family. Alternatively, it's great for those long queues that you very often find yourself in at the parks. Time in line can be spent reading the clues for that section of the book, searching for any Mickeys in the queue area, and then trying to find them once you reach the attraction. Disney fans who aren't visiting the parks in the near future may also enjoy reading the hints sections and learning where the Hidden Mickeys are located.
The books are small enough to fit into bags on a visit to the parks, and reasonanly priced so they don't break the bank!
