Disney cartoon 'Up' leads foreign box office

Playing overseas since May 29, "Up" has run a marathon race that suddenly turned into a sprint. It opened in first place in Norway, and remained No. 1 in Germany and Australia. The foreign total rose to $215 million

Opening No. 2 -- as it did in its sub-par, $15 million domestic debut -- was Disney's sci-fi thriller "Surrogates," starring Bruce Willis, which drew $12.2 million from 10 markets sparked by a strong first-place ranking in Russia ($5 million). No. 2 openings were registered in the U.K. ($1.6 million) and in Spain ($2.2 million)

Finishing third on the weekend was "Inglourious Basterds," which nabbed $7.5 million from 41 territories for an international total of $128.9 million.

"District 9" followed with $6.1 million for an international total of $56.7 million. Two films tied at No. 5 with $5.8 million each: "The Ugly Truth" ($55 million to date) and "G-Force" ($93.2 million).

In the U.K., MGM's musical update "Fame" opened a dominant No. 1 with an estimated gross of $4.3 million. The remake bombed in North America with $10 million.

The Sandra Bullock romantic comedy "The Proposal" led the field in France with $2.1 million, taking its total to $140.8 million after a $3.6 million weekend. "L'affaire farewell," a Cold War thriller from director Christian Carion, opened at No. 2 in France with $1.7 million.

Other foreign totals: "The Hangover," $182.3 million; "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," $150 million; "The Final Destination," $83.8 million; domestic champ "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," $13.3 million; and "Julie & Julia," $8.3 million.
