Just as Tropical Storm Fay gave Walt Disney World and the rest of Central Florida a taste of severe weather last week, StormStruck, a new mini-attraction based on hurricanes, blew into Epcot.
StormStruck: A Tale of Two Homes is presented by the nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH), a coalition formed by insurance companies and others involved in hurricane preparedness and response. The attraction, set inside Epcot's Innoventions East pavilion, lets visitors experience a bit of what hurricanes can do.
After viewing an introductory video featuring The Weather Channel broadcaster Jim Cantore, visitors enter a small theater where they view a wide-screen, 3-D computer-animated video showing a major hurricane hitting several houses in a suburban neighborhood. Then visitors can take a quiz on hurricane safety tips, followed by a second video. The experience also includes what the attendant describes as "surprises."
The grand opening, set for noon Tuesday, will be attended by R. David Paulison, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency; Bill Read, director of the National Hurricane Center; and representatives of FLASH participant companies, Disney and Walt Disney Imagineering.
