New rules have recently been introduced for travel to the USA.
Previously, UK visitors could enter the US under the visa waiver
program, meaning that they didn't need a visa. However, the rules
have changed slightly.
UK visitors can still enter the USA without a visa providing they
have a valid, machine readable passport that was issued before 25th
October 2004. Those that don't have a machine readable passport
that was issued before 25th October 2004 will need to apply for
a visa in order to enter the USA. **
** NOTE - This deadline has now been extended to 26 October, 2006.
What is a machine readable passport?
On the page underneath the passport holder's details there are two
typeface lines. They have been issued in Britain since November
1991.
What happens after this date?
If you obtain or renew a passport after 26th October 2005, but before
the introduction of biometric passports, you will need to get a
visa to enter the US.
What is a Biometric Passport?
A biometric passport will have extra data such as the user's photo
and/or fingerprint, as added security. But biometric passports will
only be available in the UK sometime after mid-2006.
Where do I get a visa from?
Visas can only be obtained, in person, from the US Embassy in London.
They currently cost £67.
My passport runs out in December 2005, what should I do?
It is recommended that you renew your passport before 25th
October, 2005.
What happens if I don't renew my passport before 25th October,
2005?
If you obtain or renew your passport after 26th October 2005, you
will need to obtain a visa in order to be allowed entry into the
USA. So you will have to travel to London and pay £67 for
each visa required.
What's this about having photos taken on arrival in the
US?
Holders of machine readable passports will have their photographs
and fingerprints taken on arrival in the USA.
Does this also apply to children?
Yes. As of 26th October, 2004, all children must have their own
passports to enter the USA and cannot travel on parent's passports.
In conclusion-
If you hold a valid British passport that expires after
2005 -
you do not need to do anything, and will be allowed entry into the
USA under the Visa Waiver Program for the lifetime of your 10-year
passport.
If you hold a British Passport that expires between 26th
October, 2005 and mid-2006 -
renew your passport before 25th October, 2005.
If you don't have a valid, machine-readable passport
that was issued before 25th October, 2005 -
you will need to visit the US Embassy in London and pay £67
for a visa.
